2016 ArtSeen Tour Call for Artists

ArtSeen Tour — October 15 & 16 — noon-5pm both days.

The time has come – we are now registering our artists for the 2016 ArtSeen Tour.  This is our 6th year, and we continue to grow and improve.   We are limiting the Tour geographically this year to only Downtown Frisco, along Main Street from Preston Road to the Dallas North Tollway.  This has been the heart of our Tour in years past, and we feel that by condensing our artists, we can make it easy for guests to see all of the artists easily.

The tour will begin at thegallery8680 and Crafted on the east end of Main Street,  and move west to Fresh Paint Studio, downtown merchants, Frisco Square, Art in the Atrium at City Hall and the Frisco Discovery Center.  We have artists in galleries, exhibits, home studios, and some hosted by downtown merchants and other out-of-the-box locations.  Collin College will also join us again in exhibiting work by their faculty and students.

If you want to join us, there is still room!  Early bird registration ends on September 1 (only $25), and regular registration ends September 12 ($40).  Details can be found here.

We look forward to another successful Tour this year!

It’s that time again — time to get ready for the 2014 ArtSeen Studio Tour. Our artist sign-up is now live.

What is the Studio Tour?  It’s a time for our local artists to open their workspaces to the public, allowing you to meet the artists in a casual atmosphere, ask them questions, and even observe them as they work.   Some studios are in the artists’ homes, some are outside their homes, and some artists pair up with another artist during the tour.  There are also other local shows to see, such as the Visual Arts Guild‘s Fall Member Show and a group show at thegallery8680.

We’ll add details on our 2014 Studio Tour page, so check back often.  If you are interested in joining this year’s tour as an exhibiting artist, see our sign up page.  As always, you can contact Misty at artseenhere@gmail.com if you have questions.

artseen studio tour 2013ARTSEEN STUDIO TOUR

OCTOBER 19 + 20,2013

Saturday 10am -5pm

Sunday 1pm – 5pm

You’re invited to the ArtSeen Studio Tour in Frisco this weekend — October 19 and 20!   This is Frisco’s third annual art tour, featuring 16 artists — painters, printmakers, photographers, sculptors and mixed media artists — and two public exhibits. Many favorites are returning this year, plus a group of new artists have joined the tour.    Print out a tour MAP to see where the studios are located.  The artists will have lots of work exhibited and for sale, and many of them will be working on projects during the tour.  This is a great time to see their workspaces, ask them questions and add to your art collection.

The fun actually starts on Friday night, with a Kickoff Party at thegallery8680.  Mix and mingle with the tour artists, along with other local art lovers, while lounging bohemian-style in the “Modern Nostalgia” installation by Swanky Couch (swankycouch.com).  There will be a free viewing of the movie “Moonrise Kingdom,” along with hors d’oeuvres and libations.  The party starts at 7:00pm and goes until at least 9:00pm. Thegallery8680 is located at 8680 W. Main Street in Frisco.

On Saturday and Sunday, while you’re visiting the studios, stop by the Frisco Discovery Center to see the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco’s Fall Member Show, “Shade:  Aesthetics in Black, White and Gray.”     There will also be three artists to visit at the Frisco Discovery Center — Leon Robertson, Danna Gann and Jane Damon — so it’s a stop you don’t want to miss.

Artists who will be in  studios all over town will be  Thomas Jordan, Tom Freeman, Ron Sexton, Barbara J. Mason, Beejae Hawkins, Misty Oliver-Foster, Carolyn M. Nelson, T. Scott Stromberg, Robert Wedepohl (also at thegallery8680), Jennifer Monet Cowley, Wendi McGowan-Ellis, Brenda G. Thomas, and Brad Sharp.  Find out about each artist by clicking their name, or visiting the ArtSeen web site.

The weather is supposed to be perfect, so grab a coffee, a friend and a TOUR MAP for a fun day of touring studios!  The tour is self-paced ,  free, and fun for the whole family. Tour maps and information about the exhibiting artists and shows can be found at www.artseentour.com.

What is a professional artist?

marketing and selling art by Misty Oliver-Foster

As I’m preparing for my upcoming workshops on marketing and selling art, I wanted to share this brief thought with you.

Often, our road to becoming a “professional” starts with a shift in our mindset about ourselves.  Then, that attitude is projected to others and reflected in our work.   We are professional as artists when we decide to be a professional.

It doesn’t matter if you make art “full time” or have a 9-5 office job and make art 10 hours a week.  You are the only one who can define who and what you are. There are a lot of “experts” in this matter (highly opinionated, often overly-educated, and undoubtedly creatively constipated), who will try to determine if you are truly good enough to call yourself a professional artist.  Don’t let anyone else define that for you.

“I believe that if it were left to artists to choose their own labels, most would choose none.”

  — Ben Shahn
